Bordeaux a vineyard to discover

SAINT-EMILION, A WORLD HERITAGE

Throughout the twentieth century, Saint-Emilion winemakers have worked to improve their wines and to define a quality classification system. The establishment of the AOC Saint-Emilion and the introduction of a continuously updated ranking system in 1954 were crucial steps. They assert the huge reputation of Saint-Emilion wines in the ever increasingly international public’s minds. Moreover, this is where, on a global level, the unique history of the vineyards of Saint-Emilion is consecrated. In 1999 it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the cultural landscape. This recognition salutes a history of over 2000 years of close interactions between the people and an exceptional terroir.

“An incredible wine shop in the heart of Saint-Emilion. Sandra and Frédéric are passionate like no one else, with a wealth of knowledge and anecdotes about the great Bordeaux wines. Their warm welcome and friendly demeanor leaves a lasting impression—they are so engaging, cheerful, and endearing. You’re lucky to have met them and to be learning about wine through their guidance. Wine is art. Wine is culture. Wine is an intellectual and introspective journey. In this age of artificial intelligence, let’s cultivate ourselves, taste, and share these moments of conviviality as best we can with a bottle of wine. Wine is also a friend who speaks of history, who tells its own story, and who helps us better understand our beautiful terroirs, as well as the people who, through their hard work, have managed to bring out the best to delight us. Loosening our tongues and opening our hearts, wine is and remains, during a tasting with friends, a magical moment like no other. Congratulations to you, to Sandra and Frédéric, and to those who honor them.”

“Last November, while sailing through Bordeaux with Viking, we found ourselves wandering the streets of Saint-Émilion after our included walking tour. No plans, just curiosity leading the way.

It’s the kind of place where every corner tempts you with another wine shop or tasting room. But one storefront lingered in my mind long before we ever stepped inside. It was Comptoir des Vignobles.

At first glance, it felt almost too quiet. No crowds spilling onto the street, no tasting flights in progress.

Just a calm, understated space that seemed to whisper rather than shout. Naturally, I was intrigued.

After the tour, we made our way back, and that’s when the magic happened.

We were greeted by Sandra, whose warmth instantly set the tone. With our nonexistent French and her welcoming, easy English, she guided us through what became one of the most memorable wine experiences ot our trip.

This isn’t your typical Saint-Émilion tasting room.

Comptoir des Vignobles specializes in rare and collectible bottles – wines that feel more like treasures than souvenirs. It’s likely why many visitors simply pass it by. No quick tastings, no casual pours – just a thoughtfully curated collection and a more personal, intentional approach to wine.

Sandra walked us through their collection with care, eventually helping us choose a beautiful, approachable bottle that now sits patiently at home, waiting for the right moment to be opened. (You know the kind – the one that deserves an occasion.)

And then, as if that wasn’t enough, she offered to show us the cellar.

Quiet. Intimate. Unforgettable.

It’s these unexpected, unhurried moments, the ones you can’t plan, that stay with you long after the trip ends. We left wishing we had room in our luggage (and budget) for more.

But that just means one thing – we’ll be back.”
